C&W tests new Internet modem for local use

Internet users in Jamaica will have local access to another brand of wireless modem - Micronet - to be distributed by Intcomex Jamaica

Under the distribution deal signed recently with Copia Wireless Communications Ltd, Intcomex Jamaica will have exclusive distributorship in Jamaica for the Micronet modems.

At present Cable & Wireless - the island's largest Internet services provider - only offers consumers the Alcatel modem for Internet connection.

However C&W has already tested and certified the Micronet modems to work on its ADSL network. This modem offers wireless connection, routing capabilities and VPN (virtual private network).

Intcomex says its will sell the modems through its reseller network. The Micronet models offer a four-port switch, built-in firewall, and have routers.

"These new modems will make the initial costs of DSL affordable to more people," says Copia's managing director, Darryl Wehmeyer. "And because Micronet offers an integrated product, Internet users will find setting up simple and user friendly."

Copia Wireless Communications is a three-year-old full service distributor of wireless networks and VoIP products. It is the Caribbean distributor of Micronet, a developer of advanced networking solutions.
